The iconic Victoria River Downs cattle station in Australia’s Northern Territory, once believed to be the largest pastoral lease in the world, covering 15,830 square miles—the size of Switzerland—it now consists of 1,500 square miles and around 33,000 cattle. Each year the current owner, Heytesbury Pastoral, sells around 40,000 steers and heifers from all their cattle stations, mostly to feedlots in Indonesia and Vietnam. The drovers work dawn to dusk, getting their meals at the “silver bullet” kitchen trailer, which boasts a generator and a wood-fired hot shower but no cell phone connection or Wi-Fi.
