The Herkules hop harvest is underway near Wolnzach, Germany. About a third of the world’s beer is made with German hops, which add bitterness and complex flavors during the brewing process. These perennial vines thrive in a narrow climatic band about an hour’s drive north of Munich, where they are trained each spring to climb up wire trellises some 23 feet tall.
