Abandoned hut of Robert Falcon Scott, who set off from this hut to reach the South Pole by human-powered sled, only to die on the return trip from cold and starvation. Located at Cape Evans, Scott built this hut in 1911 from a kit purchased in Australia. It is still stocked with supplies from his failed expedition and is maintained by the Antarctic Heritage Trust. The hut is preserved by permanently dry and freezing weather. Combined with its remote location, this has kept it close to the state in which the remnants of his team left it when they were rescued almost one hundred years ago.
