Delicate whorls spiral the hills and gullies of a Loess Plateau village in China’s Pengyang County. Mimicking the contours of natural formations, these concentric steps have been shaped by farmers to better accommodate terraces of wheat. Drought and water shortages continue to be obstacles to farmers struggling to maintain the labor-intensive terraces, even as their children migrate to cities seeking better-paying jobs. Pengyang County, Ningxia, China.
