Harold Myers, a US Customs Patrol officer drives back roads parallel to the Mexican border with a small light attached to his door to look for fresh footprints. Myers is part of a special squad of Native Americans that patrol this unfenced stretch of the border on the Tohono O’odham Indian Reservation. Fresh tracks are indicated by sharp edges with no sign of drying, and footprint depth and length of stride indicate whether the suspect is carrying a load. In the winter they average 3-4 arrests per week, mostly for trafficking marijuana.
