Nathalie Romatet (at left in white) tends to her vegetable garden at Chateau Miromesnil, Normandy, France. Her grandmother purchased the chateau in 1938 and developed the walled garden to feed her family of eight children and associated staff and provide bouquets of flowers for the château. The garden has over seventy different vegetables, fruit trees, and flowers — an assortment that contributes to soil and insect biodiversity. It is only 0.25 hectares in size, but can currently feed 30 people with fruit, vegetables, and flowers from June to October. The writer Guy de Maupassant was born on the chateau’s first floor in 1850.
