A Javanese transmigrant tries to escape the smoke from a brush fire set to clear his new land for planting in the coming wet season. Native Irianese are not paid for land taken by the Indonesian government for transmigration settlements, and most of the sites are on land that is not suitable for sustained agriculture. To ease crowding on the islands of Java and Bali, the government offers five acres, a year’s worth of rice, and a one-way air ticket to anyone who will move to an undeveloped region.
