Haarman Family Dairy in the Netherlands specializes in goat milk, with a herd of 2,400 Saanen goats milked in their 128-stall rotary system. Commercial breeds of goats like these require more food per liter of milk than similar breeds of cows, but the milk is worth substantially more. This farm has been in their family since 1929, but now with this automated milking system, the entire herd can be milked by two people in three hours. Hyper-efficient farms like this are one of the reasons that a relatively small country like The Netherlands has become the world’s second-largest food exporter.
