The pollination of California's almonds is the largest annual managed pollination event in the world, with close to one million hives (nearly half of all beehives in the USA) being trucked in February to the almond groves for the short blooming season. This business has been heavily affected by colony collapse disorder, causing nationwide shortages of honey bees and increasing the price of insect pollination. California produces some 60% of the world's almonds, and the vast majority of them are for export It takes about one gallon of water to produce each nut.
Here employees of Paul Arnold Apiaries of Michigan are checking the health of their beehives on Cobblestone almond orchard owned by Lent-Berden Developments, Oakdale, CA. The old Aerorotor windpump was for a cattle farm, that has since been planted in almonds with drip irrigation system.
