An employee at the Ithaa Restaurant, which is located underwater at the Conrad Rangali Resort, checks the table setting in preparation for the breakfast rush. Outside divers clean the glass, which is done twice daily. Breakfast here costs $150 per person plus tax, and dinner $320/person. The arched ceiling is 10cm thick and located 1.5 meters below sea level. The restaurant opened in April 2005, at a cost of $1.5 million. The restaurant is accessed via a spiral staircase, and the top is about two meters above sea level. During the tsunami on Dec 26, 2004, the sea level surged about one meter here. Resort costs approx. $1,000 /night for a couple.
This photograph is part of a project that examines the global impact of rising sea levels, and the ways different countries and communities are engineering solutions to this growing problem.
