Early morning in the fishing port of Jafarabad. Boats offloading their catch of Bombay Duck, and some shrimp and prawns, which are caught by motorized bottom trawlers with a crew of eight men that work 10-15 miles out, and stay out for 2-3 days at a time. They have blocks of ice in their holds to keep their catch fresh. Once ashore, the fish are put up to dry by women on vertical racks that line the waterfront. The women are paid INR 300 (US$4.00) per day for this kind of work, and the men make INR 200-250K for the 8 month season. The dried fish, a cheap source of protein for sauces, are sold throughout India, and some are exported to Bangladesh.
The pier has two cranes which are used to haul boats out of the water for repairs.
