Waterloo Cattle Station, NT, Australia, 24 August 2022. Road Train truck brings a load of 1 year old cattle (“weeners”) from a muster point to the a temporary feed-yard on Waterloo Cattle Station, where they will learn to live without their mother for a week or two before being transferred to grow and fatten up at another cattle station with better dry season fodder. The other station (Willaroo) is located on an all weather road, allowing for export during the wet season when cattle prices are higher. August 2022. Drafting (sorting) semi-feral Brahmin cattle on Waterloo Cattle Station. The cattle have been roaming freely through the vast roadless areas of the station before being here’d to the mustering yard where they can be sorted (“drafted”)by age. The youngest calfs, less than six months old are vaccinated, de-horned, earmarked, and branded (and the males are castrated and given a growth hormone implant to substitute some of the hormones lost by castration). The bigger calfs, knows as “weeners”, are separated from their mothers for shipment to another cattle station for further fattening and shipment during the wet season.
Waterloo Cattle Station currently covers the 189K hectares and was established here in the mid-1880s.
