Planting lettuce in a rotating hydroponic farm just west of Tokyo. The seedlings are placed in the center and the plants slowly rotate for a month before being harvested at the outer edge. The roots are nourished by water mixed with a carefully monitored diet of phosphate and other minerals. This hydroponic method results in a slightly sweeter variety of lettuce that can be harvested daily, and year-round. The system was developed after the nuclear disaster in Fukushima as a method to grow vegetables without risk from contaminated soil and water.
