Barchan dunes and associated eroded marine sediments some 20 nautical miles SE of Lake Afrera. The Danakil (Afar) Depression has been inundated numerous times by changing sea levels and rifting, and the soft clay surface is covered in marine sediments and small sea shells. The temperature in flight was 104°F at sunset. I observed two male ostriches and a string of five or six camels being led through the bottom of the dry river bed at the base of the valley.
Here Laurent Salinas can be seen flying his motorized paraglider just before his propeller came off in mid-flight.
