Villages dot the silty islets of the Jamuna (Brahmaputra) River upstream from Dhaka. They were covered in flood waters less than a month ago as severe rains caused the river to break its banks. I was told that this happens about six out of every ten monsoon seasons, and the locals are forced to temporarily evacuate to higher ground, but they keep coming back for the fertile soils, fishing, and cheap land. Jute is a significant source of income and thrives on the silty soils.
