A video monitor of a 'Secure 1000' reflects off the glasses of the chief technologist for Rapiscan in Hawthorne, CA. The refrigerator-size scanner can see through clothing for concealed weapons and contraband and is used by US Customs as an alternative to a strip search. Rapiscan is now trying to develop a newer version that will disguise a person’s anatomy while revealing suspicious items. On the model being scanned in the background are a Glock 9 pistol, a brick of plastic explosive, a ceramic knife, a cell phone, pocket change, and car keys.
