Starting as a produce stand in Anaheim, California, in 1964, Grimmway Farms has grown into the largest carrot producer in the world and the largest supplier of organic vegetables in the United States, with more than 70 square miles growing sixty-five different crops in California, Oregon, Colorado, and Florida. Now based in Bakersfield, California, the company acquired the Cal-Organic and Bunny Luv carrot brands in the 1990s that pioneered the sale of baby carrots. Thin mature carrots that have been skinned and cut to size, baby carrots helped usher in the healthy snacking movement in the US. The company uses crop rotations, cover crops, and composting to reduce inputs and restore carbon to the soil, and it has a 4.75-megawatt solar farm to help power processing facilities that handle some 10 million pounds of carrots each day.
