Named “Pouera,” this dormant volcanic crater was a Maori “pa” (fortress) at the time Europeans landed in New Zealand. The uppermost part of the rim was the stronghold with trenches and a palisade of sharpened posts to protect the inhabitants from raids by other Maori tribes. Terraces on the hill slope were used for farming.
