Hindu pilgrims come to take a holy dip in the water at the confluence of the Ganga (Ganges) and Yamuna Rivers on the peak day of the Maha Kumbh Mela. This Hindu festival attracted 57 million on this day and an estimated 400 million people over six weeks when Jupiter is aligned with the sun and moon. Before sunrise on the morning this photo was taken, dozens of pilgrims were crushed in a stampede that broke through barriers, and the religious procession of holy men that is the centerpiece of the holiest day was postponed to the afternoon.
This floating dock is used by pilgrims who have enough money to arrive at the confluence by boat to avoid the crowded conditions, and have changing rooms for getting into bathing suit.
