Dead flamingos and remnants of unhatched eggs litter the downwind (eastern) shore of Laguna Colorada. Of an estimated world population of 50,000 James's flamingos some 30,000 nest on islands in this lake at 4,300m. This was an unusually wet nesting season and Bolivian park ranger Diego Berna estimated that perhaps only 50% of the normal amount of chicks would survive due to cold wet weather and nest flooding.
