Aerial view of Umm al-Maa (Mother of Water) lake in the Ubari Sand Sea. The salt water lakes here are fed by natural fresh water springs, but have slowly been drying up as the water table has dropped, presumably due to generally increasing aridity and the increased level of pumping ground water for agricultural use in Wadi al-Hayat (Valley of Life) to the south. At the bottom of the photo are European tourists on qaud-bikes.
