Harvesting fields of medium grain rice just north of Knights Landing CA. All rice is for export via Port of Sacramento. Only one crop is grown per year in the flood plains of the Sacramento Valley, where the fields have been terraced to control the depth of the water, allowing a uniform process of growth and harvest. The small black levees that separate the terraces are leveled after the rice stalks are cut to make it easier to rework the rice stalks into the soil and flood it before the arrival of migratory waterfowl.
