Terraced fields of recently harvested rice near Xinjie (old Yuan Yang) in the mountains just south of the Red River. These terraces are 2,500 years old, and are worked by Hani (minority) people with the help of water buffalo. The Chinese name for this area is Ti Tian or "ladder to heaven". The vertical relief of some terraces exceeds 2,000 ft. and these are probably the biggest contiguous section of rice terraces in China.
