Eroded marine sediments some 20 nautical miles SE of Lake Afrera. The Danakil (Afar) Depression has been inundated numerous times by changing sea levels and rifting, and the soft clay surface is covered in marine sediments and small sea shells. The temperature in flight was 104°F at sunset. I observed a breeding pair of ostriches and a string of five or six camels being lead through the bottom of the dry river bed at the base of the valley.
