Wind-blown green algae fill the fish traps in the shallows of Lake Taihu every summer.
Thirty years ago, the waters of China’s third-largest lake, were clear of algae. But urban sewage dumping, livestock drainage, and excessive fertilizer use have allowed the algal blooms to flourish, and now human mismanagement and global warming have entrenched them.
