Field Safety Training course for people who will be working outside of McMurdo Station as part of the U.S. Antarctic Program. Called "Happy Camper", this training includes having to build a wind wall out of glacier ice, erect a tent, cook on a camp stove and be able to survive a night in a tent in Antarctic conditions. This particular evening was unusually difficult in -25°F "Condition 2" weather. Weather conditions in the US Antarctic Program are defined in three levels: "Condition 3" is normal (winds less than 48 knots and wind chill warmer than -75°F), "Condition 2" is 48-55 knot winds and wind chill of -75 to -100°F, "Condition 1" is winds in excess of 55 knots and wind chill in excess of -100°F). In "Condition 1" only emergency movement is allowed. The conical "Scott Tents" seen in some of the photos were developed by Robert Scott's team in their effort to reach the South Pole in the early 20th Century.
