East Arm Wharf, Darwin NT, Australia, 20 August 2022. Loading cattle for live export from Darwin’s East Arm Wharf to Indonesia on to Girolando Express, a specialized livestock carrier. Indonesian market prefers live cattle, as they can be fattened in their domestic feedlots on agricultural waste, and then halal slaughtered for sale without refrigeration in local wet markets. The cattle have been brought here after being inoculated and checked by a veterinarian, and adjusting from wild forage to feedlot rations and drinking from troughs.
