Villager Aliman Ekouel plants wheat and barley in the riverbed near Timia, Niger, on the edge of the Sahara Desert. His family garden is watered with carefully channeled flood irrigation after the summer rains have recharged the aquifers of the Aïr Mountains. Aliman worked on the camel caravans to Bilma until his father died, when, as head of the family, he was obligated to return home to operate the garden.
