Curving strips of corn, oats, and hay wind their way around French Creek organic Farm, a fifth-generation family farm near Lansing, Iowa. The Leppert family began farming their 354 acres without chemical fertilizers or pesticides in the 1970s to reduce erosion and improve soil health. After the passage of the organic Foods Production Act of 1990, the number of organic farms in the uS skyrocketed. More than seventeen thousand organic farms and ranches produced $11.2 billion in certified organic commodities in 2021. Although average yields of organic grain crops tend to be lower than conventional ones, they can be more profitable for farmers to grow, as consumers are willing to pay a premium for certified organic foods.
