Giant Clam is harvested from a shallow water cache near a village in Tabiteuea. Filter-feeding Giant Clams live as long as 70 years and are kept near a village as quasi-domestic animals that can feed an entire family in times of need. The shells, with a diameter of over 70cm, are commonly used as pig troughs as well as baptismal altars in some of the churches.
