Lightly used jeep trails cross on the edge of the Desierto de Altar. Creosote bushes dominate the sand flats of the Sonoran Desert near the Arizona border. Their spacing is controlled by long roots that spread to monopolize enough water to survive. The area is still home to a few poor cattle ranches.
