Rush hour evening traffic on the Nanpu bridge and spiral interchange leading in/out of Shanghai. Automobile use has risen along with incomes in China, and the implications of increasing energy use and greenhouse gas emissions are of global concern.
The number of registered cars, buses, vans, and trucks on the road in China reached 62 million in 2009, and was expected to exceed 200 million by 2020. The consultancy McKinsey & Company estimates that China's car market will grow tenfold between 2005 and 2030, which will increase pollution of Nitrogen Oxides to even higher levels.
