Aerial views of Masada, the ancient city that has become a symbol for the state of Israel. Masada was besieged by the Romans around 70 A.D., and they encircled before building an earthen ramp (seen in center of photo) to capture it from its determined Jewish inhabitants. The Jewish zealots who supposedly defended it are said to have died in a mass suicide rather than submit to Roman rule, but the truth of what happened there may never be known.
