Amhara, Ethiopia
Barefoot farmers carry partially threshed rice home near the shores of Lake Tana in the Ethiopian Highlands. The rice is threshed with the hooves of cattle, and everything but the final shelling of the grain is done with human or animal labor. Some 90% of Ethiopia's 110 million people are self-sufficient agriculturalists, with scarcely any cash crop for income, or access to electricity and plumbing.
