Aymara women carry a portrait of Tupaj Katari during the independence day parade. Katari was an Aymara hero who laid siege to La Paz in 1781. This independence day celebration took place in the town of Achacachi, a farming center on the east side of Lake Titicaca. Achacachi has been the center of the indigenous movement's most radical elements, especially the men known as the "ponchos rojos" or red ponchos for their clothing. This is the heartland of Aymara culture in the Andes. Aymara women traditionally wear small colonial-era bowler hats atop their braided hair.
