Fishermen along the estuary of the Colorado River in Mexico must battle tides of almost 10 meters during a full moon. This was once one of the richest fisheries on the west coast of North America but has been greatly degraded by the diversion of the Colorado River in the United States (and to Mexican farming communities in the delta) and by over-fishing. Tremendous spring floods once inundated the delta annually, but an intensive network of dams and irrigation projects in the 20th century turned this once fertile area into an almost sterile sand flat.
