Inhambane, Mozambique
Crews of islanders fish communally in the shallows between Benguerra and Bazaruto Islands at low tide. They use wooden dhows and long narrow nets that are pulled by hand across the sandy bottom. The low spring tides only last a couple of hours, but the strong ebb and flow of the tides let them net fish effectively by hand, straining the water of any fish trying to enter or leave the archipelago. The waters of coastal Mozambique have been heavily overfished for decades by locals using increasingly finer nets.
