The family gardens of Hautepierre, a northern suburb of Strasbourg, France, near the German border, radiate from the center like spokes on a wheel, connecting and providing greenspace for apartment dwellers in the surrounding area. Like the European Parliament building in nearby Strasbourg, the gardens have become an international meeting place, with French citizens of Moroccan, Algerian, and Turkish descent often gardening plots that have been tended by their families since the gardens were built in the late 1970s. The organic gardens provide produce for the table as well as a place to hold small family gatherings, serving as the community’s backyard farm. Though many of France’s family gardens have been taken over by development, Strasbourg still maintains 4,600 plots around the city, covering some 400 acres.
