Harvest time for organically-grown hand-harvested Riesling grapes planted above the the Mosel River near Bremm, Germany. This area, known as Calmont, has the steepest cultivated land in Europe (up to 70° slope), which are accessed with the aid of funicular rail system for bringing crates of grapes down the steep stony slopes. This vineyard is run by Günter Leitzgen (in apron and white shirt), who recruits friends to help him harvest the grapes by hand during the fall harvest season. The area was first planted in grapes by the Romans, and winemaking continues to dominate these lands today, in a rare example of European monoculture. The vines are of varying ages, some over 70 years old. Grapes thrive on this south facing slope, and the stony surface stops erosion, stores the heat of the day, and reduces weeds.
