Mato Grosso, Brazil
At confined breeding pig farms, nursing sows are given an unlimited supply of food and water in cages that allow them to stand up and lay down without crushing their piglets. They are confined to breeding stalls like this for approximately half of their adult lives. They spend the other half in indoor group pens. The sows are productive for 2 to 3 years before their fertility declines and they are sent to the slaughterhouse.
