Production testing facility of AeroFarms in downtown Newark, where the company is fine-tuning vertical farming growing techniques for maximizing crop yields.
Their current test facility is in an old downtown building that was formerly disco-dance club, and they have erected 7-tiers of growing racks inside. Within a few months they will start growing in a massive space that was once a steel factory. They plan to grow produce for the greater New York area, and start with crops like kale, lettuce, and other salad crops. They grow their seeds on a dense mesh and the roots dangle underneath where they are sprayed with water and nutrients. The light is all by LED, and they are experimenting with different wavelengths and frequencies to see which are most efficient.
Here a crop of lettuce is seen in side view with the roots dripping from a spray of water laced with nutrients.
