Harvesting wild oats in the fields beside Lake Titicaca. Virtually all of the agriculture in the Peruvian Altiplano is on small family farms averaging less than one hectare. The recent international demand for quinoa has caused local Aymara farmers to change their crop rotation to substitute quinoa for other grains, and provided a much-needed income boost to the aging population of subsistence farmers.
