Under the ultraviolet light of an entomologist’s flashlight, a giant hairy scorpion kills one of its own kind in the Pinacate Biosphere Reserve. Shortly after this picture was taken, just before sunrise, it carried its prey underground to devour it. Big enough to kill lizards, giant hairies spend the day underground and only emerge at night. The giant hairy is just one of about two dozen Sonoran scorpion species.
