The city of Virginia Beach has sunk by a foot since it was founded in 1963. It is located on an erosion-prone shoreline, and every few years the beach sand is replenished. The current $12M federal program has barges pump the sediment from the bottom of the Chesapeake Bay and transfer it by pipeline to the shore where it is spread out by bulldozers.
This photograph is part of a story that examines the global impact of rising sea levels, and the ways different countries and communities are engineering solutions to this growing problem.
