Arouane, an isolated village on the salt caravan route between Timbuktu and Taodenni in the Sahara Desert. Some 10 km from the village there was plenty of dry grazing, but overgrazing by visiting camel herds has left the area around Arouane and its wells stripped of all ground cover.
