Rice is believed to be a gift from the gods on the island of Bali, where farmers cultivate the crop year-round on intricate terraces, here descending like steps from the slopes of Mount Agung, one of the island’s active volcanoes. Water for the irrigated crop is provided by the subak system, a cooperative allocation method that has been central to the island’s agricultural and religious life since the eleventh century. Water from springs and canals flows through water temples before being distributed to the terraced paddies, exemplifying the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana that promotes a harmonious relationship with the gods, with fellow humans, and with nature.
