Persepolis, the ceremonial capital of ancient Persia, was begun around 500 BC by Darius the Great. This world heritage site, one of the greatest of ancient cities, was developed under the Shah into an enormous park for visitors with four helipads and a tour bus parking lot the size of a football field. The site was strangely devoid of visitors, as I saw more guards there than tourists and was told that with the current political situation only about 50 people (Iranian and foreign combined) visit Persepolis each day. After Esfahan, it is the second most visited tourist site in Iran.
