Mato Grosso, Brazil
Most pigs raised in the industrialized world spend the majority of their lives in cages of confined breeding operations. This one in Brazil exceeded European standards, which require a 30-day minimum period during each maternal cycle when the sows can walk about freely. Brazil is a major exporter of pork, as Mato Grosso corn and soybeans are the world's cheapest, with local feed costs of approx. US$90 per 120kg animal.
