The centerpiece of this heart-shaped agro-tourism development (Herzapfelhof) was created with plantings of 250 varieties of apples in Altes Land, just outside of Hamburg, Germany. Altes Land is the biggest apple-growing area in Germany, with approximately 9,000 ha of fruit trees planted on land that was first reclaimed from the river by the Dutch in the 1100s and is just 1 meter above mean sea level. All of the apples here are picked by hand, and most of the laborers are now from Romania or Poland.
