Malé, the capital of the Maldives, has over 120,000 people (1/3 of the country's population, CIA est. 394K in 2012) living on an atoll of only 2 sq. km. that is little more than a meter above the high water line.

This photograph is part of a project that examines the global impact of rising sea levels, and the ways different countries and communities are engineering solutions to this growing problem.
